Meet the Judges
Senior Packaging Scientist

Joanne is responsible for executing packaging projects for future and existing product formats. She recommends new package designs in support of product initiatives, initiates packaging design and performance enhancements, and manages promotional activities.
Rich has been an industry leader for 39 years, 23 of which at Green Bay Packaging, Inc. as Vice President/General Manager of their folding carton division. He has also been a PPC committee chairman and board member and in 2009 was the first recipient of PPC’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Sandra A. Krasovec

Fashion Institute of Technology
Sandra organizes FIT’s annual Sustainable Business and Design Conference, which advocates the value of aligning business strategy with sustainable design, is a managing partner of design management consultancy Design Practicum, and is co-author of Packaging Design: Successful Product Branding from Concept to Shelf, which is widely used as a text for introductory packaging design courses. Her experience runs over 25 years in brand strategy and packaging design for clients such as Coca-Cola, Frito Lay, Gillette, Kraft, M&M Mars, Pillsbury, Quaker Oats, Seagram, and S.C. Johnson.

Dick has worked in both the converting and consumer product sides of the paperboard packaging industry and has consulted with many companies who purchase or produce paperboard packaging. During his 50-year career, he has designed packaging in virtually every end-use category and has helped develop a variety of packaging systems. He has also authored and illustrated both editions of PPC’s Ideas and Innovation Handbook.
Dr. Diana Twede
Professor, School of Packaging, Michigan State University
Diana teaches a class on paperboard packaging and is co-author of Cartons, Crates and Corrugated Board: a Handbook of Paper and Wood Packaging Technology. She is also the co-editor of the research journal Packaging Technology and Science.
Gary is a retired packaging executive with over 40 years of experience in the industry and has held managerial positions in both the consumer package goods side of the business in procurement as well as in manufacturing, sales, and marketing. For the past five years he has also judged the Paperboard Packaging Alliance’s Student Design Challenge.
John Lyons III
As the former associate publisher of Package Design magazine, John brings the consumer/brand identity perspective to the ever-evolving packaging industry, especially as it relates to eco-friendly packaging.

Bill is also an adjunct professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and a contributing writer to Package Design magazine.
